The fortress-like Pythian Castle
was built from 1911 to 1913 by the Knights of Pythias. Its original

the group’s members and their families. During World War II the
US military took over the castle in 1942. It was used as offices and
service club for recovering veterans. It also played a role in the
internment of Italian and German POW’s. In 1993 the castle was
sold as surplus by the military. It is now privately owned.
