History
The Elmwood Cemetery is probably
most known for the Dalton Gang. Buried in the Elmwood Cemetery is Bob
Dalton, Grat Dalton and Bill Powers. Early in the morning on 5 October,
1892. five members of the Dalton Gang, Bob, Grat, Emmett, Bill Power,
and Dick Broadwell rode into Coffeyville. They intended to rob
both the Condon National Bank and First National Bank. They divided
into two groups and headed into the banks. However, the ordinary towns
folk of Coffeyville banded together to stop the robbery. From the
gun fight four citizens of Coffeyville and four members of the gang
died. Those four gang members were Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, Bill Power,
and Dick Broadwell. Emmett Dalton was wounded but survived and stood
trial for his crimes.Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton and Bill Powers were
buried in the same grave. Their only headstone the lead pipe they
had tied their horses to when they came to town. A tombstone was
later added by a brother. Also buried at the Elmwood Cemetery are two
of the defenders of that day. Charles Brown and George Cubine. U. S
Marshall Frank Dalton is buried at the Elmwood Cemetery. He was brother
to the Dalton boys of the Dalton Gang. His headstone was provided
by "his loving mother." We previously did an investigation of the Brown
Mansion in Coffeyville Kansas. The Brown family is buried in the
Elmwood Cemetery. See our Brown Mansion presentation to learn
more about the Brown Family.
