History
Built in 1906 by the
architectural firm of Wilder & Wight of Kansas City, Mo. This
colonial revival mansion features three stories with sixteen rooms. The
Brown Mansion was built and owned by one family until it was sold to
the City of Coffeyville. It was inducted in the National Register of
Historic Places in 1976. The Nancy and William Brown had two sons
who
died in infancy; a four-year-old son, William, died of pneumonia in
1898, and son Donald died at age 11. Violet was the only Brown child to
live to be an adult. Violet was a new age woman, she married and
divorced, went to college and became a librarian.Eventually she
returned to Coffeyville to take care of her parents when they became
ill. After their death she inherited the mansion and remained
there
until she sold it in 1970 to the City of Coffeyville. Violet died
in a
nursing home in 1973. Today the mansion is the same as the day Violet
left. Personal items, antiques, photos, everything is original to
the
home. The Brown Mansion is still owned by the City of Coffeyville and
offers tours. Visit our links page to learn more details about
the
mansion, the Brown family and information on how you can visit the
mansion.
Paranormal Accounts
People report strange noises,
objects moving and apparitions. A woman who worked as a tour guide in
the mansion told us that she had found the two statues above the mantle
in the Brown's bedroom had somehow came off of their stands, missed
hitting the large mantle and landed in the middle of the floor.
People
report hearing "party sounds", music, dancing, laughter in the ballroom
and find there is noone even up there. People say you can hear someone
throwing a strike in the bowling alley but there is only to be found.
We were told that a woman took a picture of the drawing of Violet in
the second floor hallway and was pulled to the floor. Volunteers become
very frustrated with the bed in the butlers quarters. They straiten out
the bed just to find later that someone has set on the bed and left an
indention. They would again have to straiten the bed covers, but
there
was no one around. It is also reported there is man in a smoking jacket
standing in the second floor hallway. Most paranormal accounts revolve
around the second floor hallway and Donald Brown's bedroom. There
have
been many people hear a child running up and down the second floor
hallway. And Donald has been seen standing in his bedroom
Personal Experiences
During the investigation two
seperate groups of investigators found at request the temperature in
Donald's room would drop, without an explainable source. The
average
temperature was 73 degrees. The temperature would drop to 67
degrees.
While in Donald's bedroom a guest investigator experianced a
disembodied person blowing on the back of their neck. We heard
footsteps in the second floor hallway, encountered phantom smells and
general feelings of unease.
