History
The Basin Park Hotel was built on
the site of the Perry House, a four story hotel built in 1881. The
Perry House, was lost in the fire of 1890. The Grand Opening of the
Basin Park Hotel was held on July 1, 1905. Ownership changed
hands many times over the years but it always retained it's status as a
hotel. The declining Basin Park Hotel was purchased in 1944 and began
the Parkhill era. The idea was to make the Basin Park Hotel a mecca of
entertainment, bring the Chicago elite to Eureka Springs to enjoy the
drinking and gambling, even though they were illegal. This period of
merriment and mayhem lasted until 1955 when the new sheriff raided the
hotel seizing all the slot machines and liquor. The Basin Park Hotel is
also featured by "Ripley's Believe It or Not" for its (7) floors all
being ground level, as the rear of the hotel is backed to a cliff. The
hotel has been restored to its original grandeur.
Paranormal Accounts
As mentioned before the Basin Park
Hotel was built on the site of the Perry House. Many people died in the
fire of 1890, being trapped on the 4th floor of the hotel. The 4th
floor of the Perry House is where the 3rd floor of the Basin Park Hotel
is today. The 3rd floor is said to be the most active with paranormal
encounters. Guests have reported seeing a man walk through their room.
A man wearing a brown suit has been seen in the Grand Ballroom. You can
watch Victorian period dressed couples dancing around the Barefoot
Ballroom. A spirit visits Room 408 and "sexually charges" guests.
There is also a woman in a white dress wanders the hotel halls.
Personal Experiences
We felt uneasy and as if we were
being watched on the 3rd floor, not only watch but followed. At one
point an investigator felt like they were followed from the 3rd floor,
up to the 4th floor and when walking down the hall heard the footsteps
to confirm the feeling. We saw a shadow figure moving outside the back
of the Basin Park Hotel. The problem is the it is backed by a cliff and
noone is allowed back there. The sister hotel of the infamous Crescent
Hotel, the Basin Park Hotel tends to be overlooked and overshadowed.
The paranormal feeling at the Basin Park Hotel is prevelant and we are
going to go back to find the proof.
