Photographic illusions

For educational purposes we have decided to share our lesson of photographic illusion.  We ran across this with some excitement but after analyzing, debate and research we have come to the conclusion that it is so easily reproduced that it could not be evidence of the paranormal.  The illusion is during investigations some of the investigators where appearing partially invisible.  Our first encounter with the problem was intriguing but easily explained.

THOSE EXPLANATIONS ARE:
1. Our investigations are conducted in a dark environment.
2. The speed at which the camera captures the photograph. (shutter speed)
3. MOVEMENT

So any swift movement will cause this "photographic phenomena". Here are a few of our examples.

This seems very obvious, so why are we bothering to share this information? To help us and others keep in mind that a situation may occur of mistaken "ghostly" identity. As with the picture below, it is a picture of an investigator walking away but the picture is so distorted that it could be easily viewed as an apparition.

We just want to say beware of apparitions in the making by warm bodies.

      Avoiding False Apparitions

This list is not the end all be all of avoiding problematic photo's, but it will help point you in t
he right direction to have the best photographic evidence possible.

READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL
First and foremost understand your camera, it capabilities and functions.  It is not absolutely necessary to run
out an buy a 5D Mark II DSLR professional camera (I wish, hint hint Melissa). There are numerous point and shoot cameras
with the capability to take photography at night. Try finding a camera with a minimum of 8MP, ISO 100/1600, f2.0.

STUDY NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Utilize your local resources. Take a class on photography and night photography. If classes are unavailable find
the information you need online or in books. There are numerous websites, books and articles on the art of night photography.
Understanding shutter speed, ISO levels and resolution will is key in taking good photos.

STABILIZE YOUR CAMERA

As stated previously movement plays a significant role in causing these photographic problems. Remember when taking
photos as night to stabilize your camera as much as possible. The best insurance is the use of a tripod.
Tripods are almost fool proof in rectifying this problem.

BE AWARE
Take note of your surroundings when taking your photo. When taking a photo at night digital cameras will generally automatically
(and maybe manually) extend the exposure in effort to increase the quality of the picture. Longer exposure can and will cause a
false apparition if someone walks through your shot. One of my favorite night photographers (completely unrelated to ghost hunting) is
Troy Paiva. He notes his photographs are so exposed he is able to walk through the shot without even being seen or appearing as an
apparition.  His website just because I love his work is http://www.lostamerica.com

Hope I was some help,

Tiffany
